DESCRIPTION: EPW - James McCabe, London, cylinder fusee, 54mm, 18K gold or better (tested) OF original pair cases bearing London hallmarks for 1785, incuse "I C" marking below axe for casemaker Joseph Carpenter, white enamel dial, KWKS, cylinder escapement, large diamond endstone, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled balance cock with grotesque mask at its neck, gilt locking dust-cap, s#1961 with matching serial number to locking dust-cap and within inner case. Gross weight of assembled watch 95.8 dwt (149.2 g); gross weight of 18K gold case only without movement, crystal or hinge pin 47.9 dwt (74.0 g). From the collection of Robert L. Ravel, M.D.
CONDITION: Mvt: NR, fully wound, balance is gummy, overhaul needed, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, good gilt tone, some fine scratches around plate pin position, few small fine to micro-fine scratches elsewhere; excellent dial with small curved hl tight along perimeter at 10, faint hl at perimeter between 2 and 3; nearly mint hands; outer case shows little wear, scattered dents and dings to rear, ding to bezel at 9, button latch good; inner case with initials crudely scratch to rear, inner case shows light wear, fine scratches, ding near center rear, mild circumferential denting around perimeter, gold soldered repair evident internally to pendant junction; bow pivots freely; glass crystal with very short scratch near center.
